St Augustine’s recently introduced a new uniform, prompting staff and parents to consider what could be done with the old ones. Rather than letting families discard them, Year 1 teacher Fran Wallace saw an opportunity to make a difference far beyond the Gold Coast.
With the help of parents of the students and other teachers, Ms Wallace proposed collecting the outdated uniforms and donating them to a school in need, specifically Hauhui School, a small community school on Malaita Island.
Hauhui is located on a remote part of the island, a three-hour boat journey from the provincial capital, Auki. The community has no roads, electricity or running water, with families relying on a nearby stream for their daily needs.
Ms Wallace said the connection to the Solomon Islands was deeply personal. Her father, Trevor, worked in the Solomon Islands as a nurse with peacekeeping forces for 14 years. During his time there, he became familiar with the challenges faced by remote schools and health clinics. He knew exactly which community would benefit most from the donation.
“Dad always spoke about the resilience and warmth of the communities he worked with,” Ms Wallace said. “When our school changed uniforms, it just made sense to share what we no longer needed with children who would truly appreciate them.”
The response from St Augustine’s families was immediate and generous. Dozens of neatly folded uniforms, shirts, shorts and dresses, were donated, sorted and packed in a container, ready for their journey across the Coral Sea. For the students of Hauhui, the uniforms will provide not only practical clothing for school but also a sense of pride and belonging.
From Currumbin Waters to Malaita Island, a change in wardrobe has become a bridge between two communities, proving that even from a small primary school, kindness can travel a long way. St Augustine’s Principal, John Cameron, is proud of the connection that has been made between his school and Hauhui School. “It was truly heartwarming to see the photos of the children at the Hauhui School wearing our uniform. The work that Trevor and Fran did in facilitating this link between the two schools is appreciated and highlights how lucky we all are to live in Australia,” he said.
Ms Wallace’s father still has a connection with the Solomon Islands, supporting the Hauhui village on Malaita.
